Beginners' Training Courses
Throughout the year we run a series of two-day training courses over weekends aimed at providing basic dry stone walling knowledge and practice. All our courses are given by professional wallers who are qualified trainers, and cover the theory and principals of building with dry stone as well as practical hands-on instruction. There is an £80 charge for each course (or £55 for those who can only attend on the Saturday). Please note that places are limited, though we will do our best to accommodate all who wish to attend.
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions we cannot be certain that we will be able to run courses in 2022: provisional dates are listed below. Courses will be either at Easter Kinleith Farm, near Currie on the south side of Edinburgh, or at the Scottish Lime Centre at Charlestown in Fife: the decision on venue will depend on what we are able to do within the guidelines and restrictions in place at the time.
You can use the contact form (under Get in touch on the left) if you're interested in attending a training course or have any other queries, or you can download a course application form using the link at the bottom of this page.
Course dates for 2022:
14/15 May
9/10 July
17/18 September (provisional dates)
The trainers:
All our trainers are fully qualified professional dry stone wallers who have successfully completed the DSWA trainers' course and have extensive training experience. They currently include two master-craftsman certified wallers (the highest qualification level), and a former national DSWA chairman.
Books and leaflets:
We hold a stock of books and leaflets about dry stone walling, which are available for sale at our training courses for those who wish to read further about the craft. We also hold a stock of 2.5lb Pennine style dyking hammers for sale. All these items are available to purchase online from the national website (http://dswa.org.uk/books-dvds.asp, http://dswa.org.uk/leaflets.asp, http://dswa.org.uk/tools.asp), though (particularly in the case of the hammers) it is worth noting that buying them directly from the branch saves on the not insignificant postage costs of buying them online.
